DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Installation and Adjustment
1.
Place the differential case, w ith side bearin g s and
cups installed, into position in the carrier.
2.
Select the sm allest o f the o rig in al shim s as a
" g a u g in g " shim and place it betw een the b earin g
cup and the carrier on the rin g g e a r side o f the
case.
3.
Install b e a rin g caps and b e a rin g screws finger tight.
M ake sure b earin g caps are in correct m arked
position.
4.
M ount a dial in d icato r on the rin g g e a r side o f the
ca rrier, w ith the in d ic a to r p ro b e in contact w ith the
back face o f the ring gear.
5.
Position two screw drivers betw een the b earin g cup
and the c a rrie r on the side opposite the rin g gear.
6.
Pull on the screw drivers a n d force the differential
case as fa r as possible tow ard the indicator. W ith
force still applied, set the d ial in d ic a to r to zero.
7.
R eposition the screw drivers on the rin g g ear side o f
the case. Force the rin g g e a r into m esh w ith the
drive p in io n and observe the dial in d icato r. R ep eat
this o p eratio n several tim es until the sam e re a d in g
is o b tain ed .
8.
A dd the in d icato r re a d in g to the " g a u g in g " shim
thickness to d eterm ine the correct shim dim en sio n
fo r in stallatio n on the rin g g e a r side o f the case.
F o r exam ple, if the g au g in g shim was .155 inch, and
the in d icato r read in g in step 7 w as .017 inch, the
correct shim would be .155 + .017 = .172 inch.
9.
R em ove the "g a u g in g " shim an d install the correct
size shim into position betw een the b earin g cup and
the c a rrie r on the rin g g e ar side o f the case.
10.
To d eterm ine the correct d im en sio n fo r the
re m a in in g shim , first re fe r to the d im ension
o b tain ed in step 8 o f " G a u g in g P ro ced u res—Side
B earing S h im s". F ro m th a t figure, su b tract the size
o f the shim installed in step 9 above; th en add .006
inch for p relo ad a n d backlash.
F or exam ple, if the re a d in g in step 18 w as .329 inch,
and the shim ju st in stalled on the rin g g e a r side o f
the case w as .172 inch, the correct shim d im ension
would be .329 —.172 = .157 + .006 = .163 inch.
11.
S pread the differen tial c a rrie r as show n in figure
2F.
12.
A ssem ble the shim d e term in ed in step 10 into place
betw een the b ea rin g cup a n d the carrier.
13.
Rem ove the sp re a d e r and the d ial in d icato r.
14.
Install the b e a rin g caps in m ark ed positions and
torque cap screws to specifications.
15.
Install dial in d ic a to r and check rin g g e a r backlash
at four equally spaced p o in ts aro u n d the rin g gear.
Backlash m ust be held to .004" to .009" and m ust
not vary m ore th a n .002"
betw een positions
checked.
16.
W henever backlash is not w ith in lim its, differential
b earin g shim pack should be corrected to bring
backlash w ith in lim its.
a.
Low backlash is corrected by decreasing the
shim on the rin g g ear side an d in creasin g the
opposite side shim
an equal amount
b.
H igh backlash is corrected by in creasin g the
shim on the rin g g e ar side an d decreasing the
opposite side shim
an equal amount
17.
Check gear tooth contact, u sing yellow lead m ethod,
as described in " G e a r T ooth C o n tact P attern
C heck".
18.
U sing a new gasket, install housing cover and
torque bolts to specifications.
19.
R einstall the re a r univ ersal jo in t, an d torque " U "
bolt nuts to specifications.
20.
Install axles into c a rrie r a n d axle flange over hub
studs.
21.
T orque hub stud nuts to specifications.
22.
Fill differential w ith lu b rican t.
23.
Install w heel an d tire assem bly.
CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS
