p in io n is (—2), add .004" shim s to the o rig in al shim
pack.
DRIVE PINION
Assembly and Installation
1.
D eterm in e the correct p in io n d ep th shim by using
the c h art in figure 9F.
2.
Install the p in io n d ep th shim in re a r cup bore.
3.
Install re a r b earin g cup by using d riv er h an d le
J-8092 and in staller J-24381.
4.
To the o u ter shim pack (fo r settin g p relo ad ) add or
Pinion Code Chart
rem ove an equal am o u n t as w as ad d ed or rem oved
from the in n e r shim pack.
5.
Install o u ter cup in c a rrie r bore, using installer
J-7818 w ith D rive H andle J-8092.
6.
Press re a r p in io n b e a rin g o n to p in io n sh aft, using
installer J-24433.
7.
Install drive p in io n and b e a rin g into the differential
carrier.
8.
Install p relo ad shim s and fro n t p in io n b earin g . Do
not install oil seal at this tim e.
9.
Install flange an d holding b a r J-8614-11 as shown
in "D riv e P in io n —R em o v al".
10.
Install w asher and n u t o n to p in io n shaft. T orque
nut to 250 lbs. ft.
11.
Rem ove holding b ar and w ith an inch p o u n d torque
w rench m easure ro ta tin g to rq u e. R o tatin g torque
should be 10 to 20 in. lbs. w ith o rig in al b earings or
20 to 40 in. lb. w ith new b earin g s.
N O TE: T orque re a d in g to s ta rt sh a ft tu rn in g
m ust be d isreg ard ed .

If torque

specifications, adjust shim pack as necessary.
a.
To increase p reload, d ecrease the thickness o f
p reload shim s.
b.
To decrease p relo ad , in crease the thickness o f
preload shim s.
13.
W hen b earin g p relo ad m eets specifications, rem ove
nut, w asher and flange fro m p in io n sh aft.
14.
Install new p in io n oil seal in to housing as shown in
* figure 1 IF, using J-24384.
15.
Install flange, w asher an d nut. U sing h o ld er bar
J-8614-11, torque nut to 250 lbs. ft.
