2. Inspect rin g gear pilot case flange a n d back o f rin g
g e a r for d irt or burrs.
3. Install two guide pins (m ad e fro m cap screws w ith
heads cut off an d ends slotted) to new g ear
diam etrically opposite each o ther.
4. S tart guide pins th ro u g h case flange an d tap rin g
g ear on case.
Differential Bearing Replacement
1. Install Tool J-8107 m ak in g sure p u ller legs are fitted
securely in notches in case and tig h te n re ta in in g
yoke as show n in F igure 7G .
2. T ighten p u ller screw to rem ove b earin g .
3. Place new b earin g on h u b w ith thick side o f in n e r
race tow ard case and install b e a rin g using J-1488 as
shown in F igure 8G.

Differential Reassembly
1. L ubricate differential side gears, p in io n s and thrust
w ashers.
2. Place differential p in io n s a n d th ru st w ashers on
spider.
3. A ssem ble side gears an d p in io n s and th ru st w ashers
to left h a lf o f d ifferen tial case.
4. A ssem ble rig h t h a lf o f case to left h a lf being sure
to line up m arks on the two halves.
5. Install d iffere n tia l-to -rin g g e a r bolts and lock
w ashers and tig h te n evenly u n til rin g g ear is flush
w ith case flange.
6. Rem ove two g uide p in s a n d install re m a in in g two
bolts. T orque all bolts a lte rn a te ly an d evenly to
specifications.
Reassembly
1. Place new p in io n b e a rin g re ta in e r gasket on the
re ta in e r and install p in io n assem bly in carrier.
N O T E : T he p in io n assem bly should be
pressed in to the c a rrie r to p rev en t the
possibility o f d a m a g in g the shim s.
2. Install p in io n b e a rin g re ta in e r bolts and lock
w ashers and torque bolts to specifications.
3. L ubricate differen tial b e a rin g rollers w ith engine oil
and place o u te r races over them .
4. Install differential assem bly in c a rrie r an d install
adjusting nuts.
CAUTION: Carefully slide adjusting nuts
alongside the bearings so that threads on nuts
fit into threads in carrier.
5. Install differential b e a rin g caps m ak in g sure the
m arks on the caps line up w ith the m ark s on the
carrier.
6. Install b e a rin g cap bolts a n d lock w ashers and
tig h ten until lock w ash ers ju st flatten out.
Backlash and Preload Adjustment
1. W ith differen tial b earin g cap bolts loosened ju st
en ough to p e rm it tu rn in g the b e a rin g ad ju stm en t
nuts w ith Tool J-0972, rem ove all lash betw een rin g
g e ar and p in io n . See F ig u re 9G .
2. Back off left h an d ad ju stin g n u t one to two notches
to a locking position.
3. T ig h ten rig h t h a n d a d ju stin g n u t firm ly to force
differential in solid contact w ith left h a n d adjusting
nut.
4. Back off rig h t h an d ad ju stin g n u t un til free o f
b earin g ; th en re tig h te n snugly ag a in st b earin g .
5. T ighten rig h t h a n d n u t fro m one to two ad d itio n al
notches to a locking position.
