p in io n gears can be rem oved
by ro tatin g them in one direction only. U sing
F igure 8D as a referen ce, ro tate differential case
clockwise to rem ove the first gear, th en ro tate case
counter-clockw ise to rem ove the second gear. To
rem ove second gear, it m ay be necessary to assist
p in io n g ear upon its seat by p ry in g on g ear through
observation holes on case. M ark p in io n s and side
gears for reassem bly in o rig in al position.
7. Rem ove side gear, clutch pack, shim s and guides
from case. T ap the assem bly from the case, using a
brass d rift as shown in F ig u re 9D. R ep eat rem oval
on opposite gear.

8. S ep arate clutch pack assem bly from side gear.
R etain clutch pack assem bly w ith o rig in al side gear.
Inspection
1. Check clutch plates and discs fo r excessive w ear and
signs o f o v erheating.
N O TE: Clutch plates a n d discs are not
serviced separately. If re p la c e m en t is re ­
q uired, clutch pack m ust be replaced as an
assem bly.
2. Inspect p relo ad springs fo r d isto rtio n and o th er
defects.
3. C om press springs and d e te rm in e if they are
capable o f p ro p erly p re lo a d in g the clutch pack,
replace springs th a t are w eak o r questionable.
4. E xam ine sp rin g re ta in e r fo r alig n m en t betw een the
re ta in e r halves and for excessive w ear at sp rin g
seats.
Reassembly
1. L ubricate clutch plates a n d discs w ith special
p o sitractio n lubricant.
2. A lternately position clutch plate and clutch disc on
side gear, beg in n in g an d e n d in g w ith clutch plate,
until assem bly o f clutch pack is com plete. See
F ig u re 10D.
3. Install clutch pack guides on the clutch plate lugs.
M ake sure th at the clutch disc lugs en g ag e w ith side
g e a r teeth.
4. Select shim s o f equal thickness as those rem oved
from the case, or if old sh im s are su itab le, rein stall
them over the side g ear hub.
5. L ubricate and assem ble o pposite side g e a r as
above.
