2. Inspect clutch discs an d p lates fo r w ear, cracked, or
d isto rte d c o n d itio n . R e fe r to "S p e c ific a tio n s"
section.
3. Inspect side gear rings, side gears, and differential
cases for w orn, cracked, o r d isto rted co n d itio n th at
w ould re n d er these p arts unfit fo r fu rth e r services.
Assembly
D u rin g assem bly operations, all p a rts should be kept
clean and free o f d irt or o th er fo reig n m aterial. As each
p a rt is assem bled in its p ro p e r p osition, it is necessary
th a t it be lightly coated w ith the correct lu b rican t.
1. Place tab b ed Belleville frictio n plate (4) in flanged
differential case, b eing extrem ely carefu l th at
convex (bulged) side is tow ard the side gear. See
F igure 17D.
2. A ssem ble re m ain in g plates a n d discs to splines o f
side g ear ring, being sure th ey are assem bled in the
sam e o rd er o f rem oval. T he convex (bulged) side o f
the Belleville friction disc (5) should be tow ard the
side g ea r and it should nest into the Belleville
friction plate (4).
3. Place assem bled side g e a r rin g w ith plates and discs
in flanged h a lf o f differen tial case.
4. Install side gear an d cross sh a fts w ith pinions.
5. In the o rd er listed install the follow ing: (1) side
gear, (2) side g ea r ring, (3) flat plate w ith tabs, (4)
flat disc w ith teeth, (5) flat plate w ith tabs, (6)
Belleville disc w ith convex (bulged) side up, or
tow ard side gear, (7) Belleville plate, w ith convex
(bulged) side up, or side tow ard gear.
6. Position p lain h a lf o f d ifferen tial case over
previously assem bled p a rts w ith scribe m ark in g s on
b o th halves o f case in alig n m en t.
7. Install differential case bolts, but do not tig h ten at
this time.
8. Before tig h ten in g bolts, use axle sh afts an d align
splines o f the side g e a r an d side g e a r ring, on each
side. T ighten bolts evenly an d altern ately . R em ove
axle shafts.
9. O bserve if Pow er-Lok co m p o n en ts have been
assem bled properly. Each p in io n cross sh a ft can be
tig h t on its ra m p or if there is clearan ce it should
be only a few th o u san d th s, and it should be equal
at all fo u r cross sh a ft ends.
Testing Procedure
T he Power-Lok can be effectively tested fo r correct
o p e ra tio n by placing one re a r w heel on good dry
p av em en t and the o th e r on ice, snow, m ud, gravel,
grease, etc.
It can easily be d e term in ed w h e th e r o r not the n o n ­
slipping w heel is p ro v id in g p u llin g pow er. T he procedure
should then be re p e a te d w ith the op p o site w heels on the
d ry and slippery surfaces.
The above testing p ro ced u re is a ro u g h test th a t can be
m ade by the ow ner o f the vehicle. H ow ever, if it is
suspected th a t the u n it is not o p e ra tin g p roperly, it can
be checked by the follow ing p ro ced u re.
Be sure the tran sm issio n is in n e u tra l. R aise one w heel
off the floor and place a block in the fro n t and re a r o f
the opposite w heel. R em ove the hu b cap and install a
special tool across two w heel studs. A pply a torque
w rench to special tool. D isreg ard b reak aw ay torque and
observe only the torque re q u ire d to continously tu rn the
w heel sm oothly.
If the torque read in g is less th a n 40 fo o t-p o u n d s or m ore
th an 200 ft. lb., the u n it should be d isassem bled and the
necessary re p airs m ade.
