REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL

DIFFERENTIAL CASE
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist w ith re a r axle h a n g in g free.
2. Rem ove w heel and tire assem blies.
3. T he axle sh afts are fu ll-flo atin g type w ith flanged
o u ter end o f sh aft attach ed to w heel hub by studs
and nuts. W heel is su p p o rte d by tap ered roller
bearings at o u ter end o f axle housing.
a. R em ove axle sh a ft to hu b atta c h in g nuts.
b. R ap on axle sh aft to loosen sh a ft from hub and
rem ove shafts.
4. R em ove plug in c arrie r a n d d ra in lu b rican t.
5. Rem ove cap screws a n d lock w ashers attach in g
cover to ca rrier. R em ove cover and gasket.
6. M ark one side o f c a rrie r an d m atch in g cap fo r
reassem bly in the sam e p osition. R em ove b earin g
caps.
7. U sing sp re a d e r tool J-24385, a n d a dial in d ic a to r as
shown in figure 2F, sp read c a rrie r a m axim um o f
.015 inch.
CAUTION: Do not exceed this dimension, as
carrier may be permanently damaged.
8. Rem ove the dial in d ic a to r an d use a p ry b a r to
rem ove the differential case fom the carrier. R ecord
the dim ensions and lo catio n o f the side b e a rin g
shim s. R em ove the sp re a d e r tool.
Disassembly
1. Rem ove differential side b earin g s by p lacing
J-22912 u n d e r bearings a n d su p p o rtin g plates on a
press bed. A pply force to pilo t p lug J - 8 107-3 to
drive the case from the b earin g .
N O T E : U se care not to d am a g e case hubs
w ith tool J-22912.
2. Rem ove the ring g e ar bolts an d the rin g gear. T ap

the ring g e ar w ith a so ft-fac ed h a m m e r to free it
from the case.
3. Scribe both case halves fo r reassem bly in sam e
position.
4. Rem ove bolts h o ld in g case halves together, as
shown in figure 3F.
5. T ap lightly on top h a lf o f case to free it from the
bottom half. R em ove top h a lf o f case.
6. L ift out all in te rn a l parts.
Inspection
1. C lean all gears an d b e a rin g s in solvent. Inspect
cups, races an d rollers fo r scoring, ch ip p in g or
evidence o f excessive w ear.
2. Inspect rin g g e a r teeth a n d m ach in ed surfaces.
E xam ine fit o f in te rn a l gears.
3. Inspect p in io n cross-shaft.
4. R eplace p a rts as req u ired .
