18-6. CHECKING STEERING COLUMN
FOR ACCIDENT DAMAGE
Cars involved in accidents resulting in body
damage or where the steering column has been
impacted may also have a damaged or misalign-
ed steering column.
Checking Procedure
1) Check capsules on steering column bracket;
all should be within 1.0 mm (0.039 in) from
the bottom of slots. If not, steering column
assembly should be replaced. Use thickness
gauge for convenience.

Each capsule should be
within 0 1.0 mm
(0 0.039 in.) from
the bottom of slot. If
not, replace column
assembly.
2. Within 0 1.0 mm

3) Take measurement “B” of steering lower
shaft as shown. If it is shorter than specified
length, replace it with new one.

4) Check steering shaft joints and shaft for any
damages such as crack, breakage, malfunction
or excessive play. If anything is found faulty,
replace.
2)Take measurement “A” as shown. If it is
shorter than specified length, replace column
assembly with new one.

5) Check steering shaft for smooth rotation. If
found defective, replace as column assembly.
