Connecting the Cables
3-9
Checking for Correct Operation
When you have made all the necessary connection, switch the power switch on the rear
panel of the Gateway to the on position. The Gateway runs through its Power On Self Test
(POST).
Normal LED indications during the self test are as follows:
!"
All the LEDs go on.
!"
The Power LED stays on.
!"
The Test LED flickers 9 times and stays on for 10 to 20 second before it goes off.
!"
The LAN Link LED corresponding to the connected LAN ports stay on while those
not connected go off.
!"
The WAN and LAN Session LEDs gradually flicker and gradually go off.
If the LED indications do not correspond to the normal indications, see “LED Indications”
in Chapter 9, “Troubleshooting the L2W-323 Gateway.”
Connecting to the Console Port
The console (serial) port on the front panel of the Gateway allows you to connect the
L2W-323 Gateway to a PC or a modem for:
!"
Local or remote diagnostics; see “Monitoring the Gateway” in Chapter 8, “Servicing
the Gateway.”
!"
Special configuration of IP addresses and subnet masks; see “IP Address Problems” in
Chapter 9, “Troubleshooting the L2W-323 Gateway.”
The console port has a female 9-pin D-type connector. The crossover (null modem) cable
required to connect it to a PC or a modem is provided in the Gateway package. This cable
has a 9-pin male connector on one side; on the other side it has a male 25-pin connector and
a 9-pin female connector or both. For information, see “ Null Modem Cable” in Appendix
A, “Cable Connectors and Pin-outs.”
