Lay the starter

on its back on a work

surface.

Remove the three

screws securing

the

pawl retainers

to the

pulley.

Remove

the

three

pawl springs,

as shown.

the

illustration,

two

springs

have already

been

removed and the third is being removed.

Remove

the

three

pawls from

their

retainers.

Remove

the

center

screw

from

the hub.

Hold the pulley, and at the same

t irrie , lift the spindle and pin assembly,

then

the equalizer

cup, and friction

spring, from

the pulley.

WARNING

The rewind spring is a potential

hazard.

The spring is under tremendous

tension when

it is wound -- a real tiger

in a cage.

If the

spring should accidently

be released,

severe

personal

injury

could

result

from

being

struck

by the spring with force.

Therefore,

the following step

MUST

be performed

with

care

to prevent

personal

injury

to self

and

others

in the area.

If the spring should be

accidently

released

at the wrong t ime, such

action

would be a

BAD SCENE,

a very

BAD

SCENE,

because

serious

personal

injury

could result.

Lift the pulley straight

up and at the

same

time

work

the

spring

free

the

ATOP FLYWHEEL WITH SPRINGS

9-25

pulley.

The spring has a small loop hooked

into the pulley.

An alternate

and safe

method

is to

hold the

pulley

and the

housing

together

tightly

with the legs extending

downward in

the normal direction.

Now, lower the com-

plete

assembly

to the floor.
