DISASSEMBLING

2- Observe

the caps and find the identi-

fying mark or boss on each.

If the marks

are

not

visible,

make

an identifying

mark

prior to removing the thru-bolts

as an essen-

tial aid during asembling.

Remove the thru-

bolts from the bracket

and the starter

mo-

tor.

3- Use

small

hammer

and

CARE-

FULLY tap the lower cap free of the starter

motor.

On the Autolite

starter

motor,

the

brushes are mounted in the end cap.

4- Pull on the armature

shaft

from the

drive gear end and remove

from the field

frame

assembly.

Remove the positive

brush

from its holder.

ARMA TURE TESTING

Testing

for a Short

5- Position

the armature

on a growler,

then

hold a hacksaw

blade over the

arma-

ture

core.

Turn the growler

switch

to the

ON position.

Slowly rotate

the armature.

AUTOLITE STARTER

6-35

the hacksaw blade vibrates,

the armature

commutator

has a short.

Clean the grooves

between

the commutator

bars on the arma-

ture.

Perform

the test

again.

If the hack-

saw blade still vibrates

during the test,

the

armature

has a short and MUST be replaced.

Testing for a Ground

lamp or continui ty me-

Make contact

with one probe

lead on

the armature

core and the other

probe lead

on the commutator

bar.
