Gear backlash increase due to gear wear will not affect normal operation of the gear. Wear of bearing can result in
displacement of the bevel gear pair from original engagement position. Generally, if this does not affect normal
operation of the gear, it is also allowed not to adjustment the bevel gear pair. In the case of overhaul, abnormality
of gear, replacement of gears (differential gear and small bevel gear bearing), or replacement of spiral bevel gear
pair, gear engagement adjustment shall be performed (after bearing pre-tightening).
●
Checking gear backlash
Insert a lead sheet between the idle teeth of the large and small bevel gears. Rotate the gears to squeeze the lead
sheet. Then take out the lead sheet, and measure its thickness at a point near the large end of gear (i.e. backlash),
which shall be 0.15mm ~ 0.3mm. Make measurements at three points evenly distributed on the perimeter of gear.
Backlash variation shall not be greater than 0.1mm.
If backlash does not meet the requirement, it can be adjusted by increasing or reducing the adjusting shims (5) in
the differential bearing housing (7). If backlash is too large, take a shim out of the right side and add it to the left
side. If backlash is too small, take a shim out of the left side and add it to the right side.
