5.17 Ethernet 

Switches/Routers 

5.17.1 Overview 

COTS (Cisco) Ethernet switches are used in the ArcLight Hub 

subsystem to provide ease of connectivity and Ethernet switching. In a 
typical installation at least two Ethernet switches are used, one to 

provide typical 10.1.1.0/24 Hub Ethernet segment, and one to provide 
the customer network interface segment, typically 10.1.2.0/24. 
Additionally, the same switch that provides the 10.1.1.0/24 segment is 

also used to provide 192.168.10.0/24 segment for MCD/RtNMS direct 
connectivity. 

All the Common Components Hub switching is performed on two Cisco 

3560 switches running in a redundant configuration. The 3560’s are 
segmented into several VLANs to support the individual routing 
domains. Each routing domain is separately addressed and connected 

to each support system for that function in the network. All systems, 
with sufficient number of 10/100BaseT Ethernet ports, are dual homed 

(connected to two redundant switches) on the set of switches to protect 
against downtime in the event of a failure. When this is not possible, 
e.g. FLM only has one 10/100BaseT Ethernet port; a port shall be 

reserved and labeled on the redundant Ethernet switch to allow for 
quick and easy manual connection change in case of primary switch 
failure or the component failure. 

The cables leading to the Ethernet ports on the switches are usually 
color coded according to LAN segments (red, blue, and yellow).
