Initialize settings
You can initialize a r eco r dable DVD-R/-RW
disc fo r eithe r VR mode o r Video mode
r eco r ding.
The fi r st time you load a new DVD-RW disc,
it will be automatically initialized fo r
r eco r ding acco r ding to the DVD-RW Auto
Init. setting in the Disc Setu p menu (see
p age 51).
New DVD-R discs a r e r eady fo r Video mode
r eco r ding when you load them, but it is also
p ossible to initialize them fo r VR mode
r eco r ding.

DVD+RW and DVD-RAM discs can also be
initialized as a way of e
r asing the enti r e disc.
When initializing a DVD-RAM disc, select VR
mode.

Finalize settings
Finalize
Finalizing ‘fixes’ the r eco r dings in p lace so
that the disc can be p layed on a r egula r DVD
p laye r o r com p ute r equi pp ed with a suitable
DVD-ROM d r ive.
It is also p ossible to finalize DVD+RW discs.
This is only necessa r y if you want the DVD
p laye r to dis p lay the title menu fo r the disc.

Undo Finalize
You can undo the finalization on DVD-RW
discs
r eco r ded on this r eco r de r in Video
mode. You need to do this if you want to
r eco r d mo r e mate r ial o r edit mate r ial al r eady
on the disc.
You can also undo the finalization of VR
mode discs which have been finalized on
othe
r DVD r eco r de r s. If when you load a disc
the message This disc cannot be recorded.
Undo the finalization. is dis p layed, use this
command to be able to r eco r d on the disc
using this r eco r de r .
1 Display the Home Menu.
2 Select ‘Setup’ > ‘Disc Setup’.
3 Select ‘Finalize’ > ‘Undo
Finalize’ then ‘Start’.
Optimize HDD
As you r eco r d, e r ase and edit r eco r dings, the
HDD file system g r adually becomes
f r agmented. Pe r iodically, the HDD will need
o p timizing to ‘clean u p ’ all the f r agmented
files.
When the HDD needs o p timizing the
r eco r de r will automatically dis p lay a
message r ecommending o p timization.
Important
• O p timizing the HDD can take u p to eight
hou r s to com p lete. Du r ing o p timization,
p layback and r eco r ding a r e not p ossible.
• Cancelling o p timization mid-way does
not undo the o p timization al r eady done,
so the HDD will be p a r tly o p timized.
Note
1 Once initialized fo r VR mode r eco r ding it is not p ossible to r e-initialize the disc fo r Video mode r eco r ding. Also,
once r eco r ded in Video mode, the disc cannot be r e-initialized fo r VR mode r eco r ding.
