6 The recorder will now start finalizing
the disc.
Du r ing finalization:
• If the finalization pr ocess of a DVD-R/
-RW disc is going to take mo r e than
a r ound fou r minutes, you can pr ess
ENTER to cancel. A r ound fou r minutes
befo r e com p letion, the o p tion to cancel
disa pp ea r s.
• You can’t cancel the finalization of a
DVD+R/+RW disc.
• How long finalization takes de p ends on
the ty p e of disc, how much is r eco r ded
on the disc and the numbe r of titles on
the disc. A disc r eco r ded in VR mode can
take u p to one hou r to finalize. DVD-R/
-RW (Video mode) and DVD+R/+RW
discs can take u
p to 20 minutes.
Initializing recordable DVD
discs
DVD-R/-RW discs can be initialized fo r eithe r
Video mode r eco r ding o r VR mode
r eco r ding.

When you fi r st load a blank DVD-RW o r
DVD+RW disc, the r eco r de r initializes it fo r
r eco r ding automatically. By default, blank
DVD-RW discs a r e initialized fo r VR mode
r eco r ding. See
DVD-RW Auto Initialize
on
p age 51 if you want to change the default to
Video mode.
DVD-R discs a r e r eady fo r Video mode
r eco r dings out of the box; if you want to use
a DVD-R fo r VR mode r eco r ding, you must
initialize it befo r e r eco r ding anything on the
disc.
DVD+RW and DVD-RAM discs can also be
initialized in o
r de r to e r ase the contents of
the disc.
Important
• Initializing a DVD-RW, DVD+RW o r
DVD-RAM disc will e r ase eve r ything
r eco r ded on it. Make su r e the r e is
nothing on the disc that you want to
kee
p !
• You may not be able to r e-initialize a
DVD-RW disc in a diffe r ent fo r mat if it
was o r iginally initialized on an olde r DVD
r eco r de r .
• Once initialized fo r VR mode r eco r ding,
you can’t r e-initialize a DVD-R back to
Video mode.
1 Display the Home Menu.
2 Select ‘Setup’ > ‘Disc Setup’.
3 Select ‘Initialize’ > ‘Video
Mode’, ‘VR Mode’ or ‘Initialize DVD+RW’.
4 Select ‘Start’.
It takes about 30 seconds to initialize the
disc (exce
p t DVD-RAM discs, which can take
u p to an hou r ).

1 If a disc was pr eviously finalized on an olde r DVD r eco r de r , you may not be able to r e-initialize and/o r initialize it
fo r Video mode r eco r ding.
