Toner level detection
The toner level in the toner hopper is monitored by the toner level sensor (TLDS).

The toner level sensor (TLDS) is a magnetic proximity sensor which is turned on by the
magnet on hopper paddle B moving close to it. When the toner feed motor (TFM) is turned
on, hopper paddle B vibrates up and down. If the appropriate amount of toner is present in
the toner hopper, the paddle moves slowly, resulting in a shorter on-time of the toner level
sensor (TLDS). As the toner in the hopper is consumed, the paddle moves faster, increasing
the sensor’s on-time. During toner replenishing, the toner empty condition is detected and
the add toner indicator lights up when the toner level sensor (TLDS) has stayed on 800 ms
or longer three times successively. With the add toner indicator on, the available copy mode
and the number of copies that can be made are restricted as set in simulation 91 (see page
3-2-31).
