UPDATING FIRMWARE 

10.1 Overview 

The CTI 2500 controller stores the operating firmware in non-volatile flash memory.  You can 
replace the operating firmware with a newer version to correct problems or add new features. 
During this procedure, the new firmware will be copied to controller RAM, verified, and then 
written to flash memory.  
 

CAUTION 

After the firmware update procedure is completed successfully, any User Program stored in the 

controller will be cleared. If you do not have a backup copy, you should save the program before 

starting the firmware update process.  

 
There are two methods available for updating firmware:

Serial Port Method 

You can use either the USB port or the RS-232 port to update the firmware. CTI 
recommends using the USB port, if possible. This port has a much faster data rate than 
the serial port, significantly reducing the time to copy the update file to the controller.

SD Card Method (Firmware Version 5.0 and above) 

You can update the firmware using an SD card containing the firmware update file. See 
APPENDIX G. – SD CARD REQUIREMENTS. 

10.2 Serial Port Method  

10.2.1 Firmware Update Planning (Serial Port Method)  

In order to upgrade the controller firmware you will need the following: 

•

 

A PC (desktop or laptop) with a RS-232 serial port or USB serial port 

If you are using the USB port, you must have previously installed the CTI USB driver. See 
Section 7.3 for additional details.  

•

 

A copy of the HyperTerminal Program

 

HyperTerminal is included with Windows XP but not Vista or Windows 7. However, you can 
find a downloadable version of HyperTerminal that is free for personal use on the Internet.  

•

 

A null modem cable (for RS-232) or a USB cable 

See Section 7.2 for cable requirements. This is the same cable used to connect the CTI 
2500 controller serial port to your PC programming software. 

 

•

 

A copy of the firmware upgrade file 

The firmware update file can be obtained from the CTI Web site.  

•

 

A base and power supply compatible with the CTI 2500 processor

 

The controller must be installed in the base and powered during the firmware upgrade 
process.  

•
