CTI 2500 Installation and Operation Guide V2.8

CHAPTER 7
COMMUNICATIONS
7.1 Overview
The CTI 2500 Controller provides several ways for programming software and HMI access the
controller facilities.
7.2 Serial Communications
The CTI 2500 provides a serial port compatible with legacy programming interfaces. Alternately,
Jumper B can be used to configure it as a printer port (see Section 2.4). The serial port
supports baud rates up to 115.2KB. The baud rate of the serial port is set by switches on the
controller circuit board (see Section 2.3). Other port parameters are fixed: Parity = Odd, Data
Bits = 7, and Stop Bits = 1.
Depending on the position of the Electrical Interface switch (see section 2.3), the port will
support RS-232 or RS-422. For most applications, you should select the RS-232 interface. This
will allow you to use null modem cables or cables that you normally use to communicate with
the Siemens SIMATIC
®
505 controllers. If you need to run a cable for extended distances, you
may choose the RS-422 electrical interface which provides better noise immunity. See
APPENDIX F. – PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS for the pinout of the serial port connector.
7.3 USB Communications
The USB port connector is identical to the port you find on peripheral devices such as printers.
USB is often preferable to RS-232 because no user configuration or customl cables are
required. You can connect your computer to this port using a USB cable that has a type B
peripheral connector (sometimes called a USB printer cable). CTI USB driver software allows
Windows programming software to communicate with the USB port as if it were a COM port.
This driver can be obtained from the CTI web site.
WARNING
The USB Port is for temporary connection only.
Do not use, connect, or disconnect unless area is known to be non-hazardous.
Connection or disconnection in an explosive atmosphere could result in an explosion.
NOTE
TISOFT and APT, which are DOS applications, cannot access the USB programming port.
7.3.1 Installing the CTI USB Driver
Before you can use the USB port for programming, you must install the CTI-supplied driver on
the PC. This driver provides an interface to the application program that emulates a standard
COM port. Using this driver, Workshop can access the USB port in the same manner as the
traditional serial port.
