Term Definition
Alarm An electronic device that will trigger an alerting state when its minimum or
maximum threshold values are exceeded.
An audible (sound) or visible (illumination; strobe; colour) alert.
Alarm Condition The active, alerting state of an alarm.
Apnea Temporary cessation of breathing.
Breathing Gases A combination of room air and pressurized oxygen provided to a patient
through the ventilator.
CAEAir1 Mechanical ventilator designed and manufactured by CAE.
Caution A written text calling attention to a serious topic that could have negative
consequences if instructions are not followed correctly.

Cybersecurity Protection against unauthorized use of software and patient data.
Ethernet (cable) A cable used to connect a computer to a local network.
Expiratory Referring to exhalation; the flow of breathing gas out of the lungs of a
patient.
Inspiratory Referring to inhalation; the flow of breathing gas into the lungs of a
patient.
Maintenance Tasks undertaken to ensure the continued correct function of a device at a
stated standard.
Mode A defined means of operation.
Operator The individual interacting with the user interface.
Parameter A setting that defines the operation of a device; a measurable, defining
factor.
Platform The ventilator computing platform is the combination of the computer
hardware and software operating system required for ventilator
functionality. The CAEAir1 generates a Platform Log report for review of
errors. See the Care and Maintenance section for more information.
Pneumothorax A collapsed lung that occurs when air enters the space around the lungs.
Sensor A device which detects or measures a physical property and provides
feedback (recording &/or indicating response).
Test sequence The listing of tests the follow the Component Functional Check.
Threshold A numeric value limit which, if exceeded, executes a change response.
Touchscreen An electronic display responsive to touch. Used for interaction with a
software interface.
