2. Adjust preload of lay shaft bearings. Adjust the bearings by selecting the seal package
8 (see figure 59) under the bushing sleeve 5 cover 9. Torque necessary for rotating the lay shaft
must be 0.9-1.5 Nm (0.09-0.15 kgfm).
When measuring the torque with force meter, wind the wire to the cylindrical gear
crown, the force meter should indicate within
18.3-30.5 N (1.83-3.05 kgf). Mind that the idler gear is moved to reduce side backlash when the
seals from the sleeve cover during bearing adjustment are removed, so to maintain the backlash,
install additional seals under the bearings bushing sleeve 5.
3. Install the sleeve with the conical pinion to the main gear crankcase. Tighten sleeve
fixation bolts with 60-80 N (6-8 kgf). Check conical gears engagement with paint. Stamp length
should be minimum 60% of tooth length (see Table 12).

The print should not be closer than 5 mm to the tooth edge. Herein, side backlash in the
teeth (near the wide part) must be 0.1-0.4 mm. To change the side backlash of conical gears with-
out contact impairment, move both gears to the distance pro-rata the teeth number of each gear,
i.e. move the idler gear 2.2 times (24:11) farther than the pinion.
