4.8 Fifth-Wheel Coupling 

 

The tractors have a fifth-wheel coupling that is dedicated for: flexible coupling of the tractor 

with the semi-trailer having king pin of 50 mm diameter; transfer of drawbar power from the trac-
tor to the semi-trailer; manual-automatic hitch and separation of the tractor and the semi-trailer. 

Fifth-wheel coupling consists of a fifth-wheel 8 (see figure 141), brackets 7 and detachable 

coupling mechanism. Rubber absorbers in the connection place of the fifth-wheel and the brackets 
provide fifth-wheel sweeping in the longitudinal and transversal planes and reduce dynamic stress. 

4.8.1 Towing coupling is located under the fifth-wheel and is shown in view A (brackets 7 

are not shown for clarity). When drawing control joystick by the unlocking device 1 through the 
lever  3,  locking  valve  10  releases  gate  hook  9  and  it  turns  by  spring  force  5  to  the  position  for 
coupling. Lowering the control joystick by spring force 4 the locking valve 10 holds the gate hook 
9. 

When coupling the semi-trailer king pin turns the gate hook 9. The valve 10 and the joystick 

1 move to the closed position by spring force 4. Accidental uncoupling interlock 2 fixes the joy-
stick 1 in this position.
