Measure the shaft moment by rotating it smoothly in one direction, and minimum after
five full turns. Mind that incorrect bearing adjustment can lead to destroy of bearings as well as
main gear wheels.
4.2.6.5 Adjust the main gear as described below:
1. Put the main gear into the tool, remove the differential and the flanges. Unscrew the
bolts of bushing sleeve fixation to the conical pinion. Remove pinion shaft with the bushing
sleeve and the pinion.
Clamp the pinion by its rim in vice. Unscrew cover bolts and remove it. Unlock the lock
nut and unscrew it. Remove lock and keyhole washers. Tighten the nut with 450-500 Nm (45-50
kgfm) torque.
If there is no backlash after the nut is tightened, there is no need to adjust the sleeve
bearings.
Calculate the adjusting washer 23 thickness decrease according to figure 59 (backlash
value plus 0.03-0.05 mm of preload). Unscrew the nut, remove the bearing and the adjusting
washer. Grind (or choose) the washer to proper size, install the washer and assemble the bearing
unit of the conical pinion. Nut torque moment is 450-500 Nm (45-50 kgfm). Lock the lock nut by
bending the washer to one of its planes. Torque necessary for rotating the conical pinion in the
bearings must be 0.6-1.4 Nm (0.06-0.14 kgfm). Force meter should indicate 7.5-17.5 N (0.75-1.75
kgf) when unwinding the wire (see figure 65).
