Air filter is installed on the right wing and fixed with brackets and clamps. Air intake
tube is fixed on the filter.
Air is fed to the air filter through air intake tube 1 according to figure 36. The air entering
the filter 11 and going through the inertial grid starts rotating in the ring gap between the casing
and the filtering element, due to centrifugal force dust particles are thrown to the casing wall and
collected in the hoper through the partition opening. Then the cleaned air goes through the filter-
ing element where it is finally cleaned. The clean air goes to the turbocharger 6 from the air filter
through the air ducts 10,5. From the turbocharger the air is pumped through the air duct 9 to the
inlet air cooler 8, where it is cooled and then goes to the engine cylinders. The air feed system has
a chute 4 to discharge crankcase fumes from the engine and a chute 3 to supply air to pneumatic
compressor.
To increase air cleaning efficiency entering the engine and to prolong life of the filtering
element pre-cleaner is installed to the air cleaner.
The air filter first stage is maintained periodically basing on the truck operation condi-
tion. Air filter maintenance necessity is defined by the clogging indicator located on the dash-
board. When the indicator is on (the clogging sensor 2 is actuated), maintain the air filter.
To maintain the first stage disconnect the air ducts, remove cover, unfasten the fastener,
remove carton filtering element, remove the air filter, remove dust from the hoper lid. Clean the
casing and the cover in diesel fuel or in hot water, air with compressed air and dry.
Inspect the filtering element. Dust on the internals of the filtering element proves that the
filtering element and the sealing gaskets are not tight, replace the filtering element.
Seal quality is checked by integrity of its impression on the gasket.
To maintain the filtering element, remove the pre-cleaner and clean it from dust by shak-
ing or airing it. If there is dust without soot and smoke on the carton (the filtering element is
grey), air it with dry compressed air until dust is completely removed. To avoid carton damage
compressed air pressure should not exceed 200-300 kPa (2-3 kgf/cm
2
). Direct air blow at the an-
gle to the surface, regulate blow force by changing the distance between the hose and the element.
If there is soot, oil, fuel on the carton or if air blowing does not help, replace it or clean
the element in warm water (40-50 °С) with detergent (e.g. laundry powder) diluted: 20-25 g of
detergent for 1 l of water. Clean the element immersing it in the solution for half an hour and then
rotate it intensely or dip it in the solution during 10-15 minutes. After cleaning in the solution
rinse the filtering element in clean warm water and dry it. It is forbidden to dry it on open flame
or with hot air (over 70 °С).
After each maintenance or when a new filtering element is installed, check it visually
lighting it from the inside.
Replace the filtering element if it is damaged, if carton goffer is broken, if carton is
peeling off, if sealing gaskets are torn.
Approximate life of carton filtering element is 30 000 km. Too intense cleaning of the
filtering element reduces its life, because the total number of element maintenance is restricted (5-
7 times, max. 3 washings including) as the carton can be ruined.
