Approximate resulting color temperatures are:
_________Approximate Kelvin value_________
a6 a4 a2 0 b2 b4 b6
Incandescent 3300 3195 3096 3000 2915 2832 2755
Direct
Sunlight 6173 5814 5495 5200 4950 4717 4505
Flash
6452 6061 5714 5400 5128 4878 4651
Cloudy
7299 6803 6369 6000 5650 5348 5076
Shade
10526 9524 8696 8000 7407 6897 6452
If you compare this to the tables Nikon supplied with older
cameras, you’ll note that either those old tables were wrong,
Nikon’s 5 MIRED per increment on the new camera is wrong,
or the new camera’s fine tuning option pushes color
temperatures differently than do the older cameras. Easy
enough to test:
D200 at 0, -3
D300 at 0, A6
Conclusion: the new cameras fine tune white balance
differently than the old. In particular, the changes are less
obvious in the lower color temperatures (e.g. incandescent)
and more obvious in the higher ones (e.g. shade).
