or the

Here’s my suggestion for a fully acceptable use of the
automatic ISO option:
• Set
High ISO NR
to
Low
.
• Set
Sharpening
in your Picture Control to
0
.
• Set
ISO sensitivity auto control
to
On
.
• Set
Maximum sensitivity
to
1600
.
• Set
Minimum shutter speed
to the lowest value you
believe you can handhold.
• Avoid
the
JPEG basic
and
Size priority
settings.
By making the settings I suggest, you’re working not only in
the “sweet spot” of the D300, but you’re minimizing the
chance that whatever noise
is
produced will show up in your
image. You will have to apply sharpening in post processing,
however.
If you’re super critical of noise, follow the above guidelines,
but set
Maximum sensitivity
to
800
.
However, I’d be remiss to not point out that setting the
camera in this kind of “all automatic” way is not something
you want to do lightly. It’s very easy to get into a point and
shoot mentality and not notice what aperture and shutter
speed the camera is setting and how that might impact the
image. Moreover, if you switch from one exposure mode to
another (say, Aperture-priority to Manual) and forget that
you’ve got the automatic ISO setting active you can end up
getting yourself into trouble and produce far less image
