What’s a focal plane? It’s the point at which the image is focused (i.e. the surface
plane of the sensor for a D300 or the surface plane of the film for a 35mm film
camera). In close up (macro) work, it’s sometimes necessary to measure distances
from the focal plane, thus the mark.

Yes, there’s a reason why I sometimes deviate from the Nikon manuals in
nomenclature. In consumer cameras, Nikon refers to the “Mode dial” as the thing
that controls exposure mode, yet here it controls shooting method. I’ve tried to
develop a consistent wording across bodies and stick to it. Those of you who’ve
moved up from other Nikon bodies should appreciate that.
