Installing the Gigabit Interface
Connector (GBIC)
GBICs can be added and removed from the switch without
powering off the system. There are three types of GBIC modules
available for the 480T switch: 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX, and
1000LH. Figure 4 illustrates a typical GBIC.

GBICs are a Class 1 laser device. Use only modules approved by the
switch manufacturer.
Note
Ensure that the SC fiber-optic connector is removed from
the GBIC prior to removing the GBIC from the I/O
module.
Caution
Exposure of the eye to invisible Class I laser radia-
tion can occur when the GBIC ports are open. Avoid
looking directly into the GBIC port when installing or
removing GBICs to eliminate any possible harmful
effects. Class I lasers are not considered harmful
under normal operation.
