The hexadecimal letters in the IPv6 addresses are not case-sensitive.
As shown in
Figure 138
, the IPv6 network prefix is composed of the left-most bits of the address.
As with an IPv4 address, you can specify the IPv6 prefix using the <
prefix
>/<
prefix-length
> format,
where the following applies.
The <
prefix
> parameter is specified as 16-bit hexadecimal values separated by a colon.
The <
prefix-length
> parameter is specified as a decimal value that indicates the left-most bits of
the IPv6 address.
The following is an example of an IPv6 prefix.
2001:FF08:49EA:D088::/64
IPv6 address types
As with IPv4 addresses, you can assign multiple IPv6 addresses to a switch interface.
Table 165
presents the three major types of IPv6 addresses that you can assign to a switch interface.
A major difference between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses is that IPv6 addresses support
scope
, which
describes the topology in which the address may be used as a unique identifier for an interface or
set of interfaces.
Unicast and multicast addresses support scoping as follows:

Unicast addresses support two types of scope, global scope and local scope. In turn, local
scope supports site-local addresses and link-local addresses.
