5.15 Starting the engine with auxiliary batteries
NOTICE Do not try to start the engine by towing the machine. This will damage the drive
system.
WARNING
Use safety goggles and rubber gloves. If any battery acid
gets in your eyes: immediately rinse your eyes with plenty of
water and get medical aid. If any battery acid gets on your
skin: immediately wash your skin with soap and water.
WARNING
When there is frost, the electrolyte in a discharged battery can freeze. Do not connect
an auxiliary battery to a frozen battery. The frozen battery can explode.
Use two 12 Volt auxiliary batteries. Use 3 well insulated jump leads with a wire cross-section of at
least 50 mm
2
. In between the auxiliary batteries and the machine, you need jump leads with a
length of approximately 3 metres.
Procedure:
1.
Switch electrical components off.
2.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch.
Take the ignition key with you.
3.
Do not connect the jump leads to the SSP batter-
ies [1] (option).
4.
Place the auxiliary batteries [2] next to the ma-
chine (as shown).
5.
Connect the (+) and (–) terminal of the auxiliary
batteries with the jump lead [4]. These batteries
are now connected “in series” and produce 24
Volts.
6.
Remove the cover [5].
7.
Put the clamp [6] on the (+) terminal of the bat-
tery [3] in the machine.
8.
Put the clamp [7] on the (+) terminal of the auxil-
iary battery.
9.
Put the clamp [8] on the (–) terminal of the auxil-
iary battery.
10.
Put the clamp [9] on a bolt on the engine. Do not
put the clamp [9] on a battery terminal: sparks
could ignite an explosive gas escaping from the
battery.
11.
Check that the jump leads do not contact rotating
parts of the engine.
12.
Start the engine (  77 ).
13.
Remove the clamps in this sequence: [9], [8], [7],
[6] and place the cover [5] back.
14.
Remove the auxiliary batteries.
