4.6.4
MAC addresses
Every network-enabled device is issued with a MAC address by the manufacturer. The
MAC address is stated on the product label. Some network environments are
configured so that only known devices are given access. In this case, the IT
department is to be notified about the MAC address so it can be authorised.
4.6.5
Firewall and network type
If a firewall is being used, it must be configured so that it permits network traffic
between the PC and the REA MLV-2D device. Security policies are usually queried
during initial system start-up.
When the operating system identifies a new network, the operator is asked whether
this is a public network. This must be answered in the negative (public networks
include Wi-Fi networks at rail stations, airports, etc. , never an operation environment
for the REA Verifier).
If particularly strict security policies apply within a company or if the network typically
experiences heavy traffic, REA recommends using a second Ethernet port on a PC
reserved for exclusive use with the REA MLV-2D.
The data medium provided contains a document that describes the network
integration in detail and also specifies which ports are used. This document should
also be consulted for difficult installations.
4.6.6
Firewall and network ports
Several modules need to be installed (see section 4.7.2). Communication between
modules is achieved using networking mechanisms (sockets and ports). The ports
used are listed below and may need to be opened in the firewall configuration:
Transwin32.exe
Port: 23945
ServiceTool.exe
Port: 23947
MorpheusHost.exe
Port: 23946
MLV_Control_PC.exe
Port: 10061
MLV-2D_Control_PC.exe
Port: 10051
readb.exe (Article Database) n/a
The firewall must not block any of the programs listed in the table, since the
applications will otherwise cease to work properly.
4.6.7
Gateway mode
The REA MLV-2D uses the TCP/IP communications protocol. UDP is used for device
detection. UDP traffic is not typically routed over a gateway. In this scenario,
connection handshaking will not work. For such a case, in the REA TransWin32
program menu Configure -> Options -> Devices the device type HOME -> Device
search should be deleted. Instead, enter a Local Device. Specification of the full serial
number is mandatory for this configuration option. The IP address is configured as
fixed. During operation, the REA MLV-2D must be assigned a fixed IP address from
the DHCP server (always the same). The MLV-2D can also be configured to use a fixed
