9 VNA concepts and features
The following chapter provides an overview of the instrument's VNA capabilities and
their use. It contains a description of the basic concepts that the analyzer uses to
organize, process and display measurement data. Also included are descriptions of the
screen contents, possible measured quantities, calibration methods and typical test
setups.
For a systematic explanation of all softtools, functions and parameters refer to Chap-
ter 10, "VNA GUI reference" , on page 309.
9.1 Basic concepts
The VNA mode provides various functions to perform a particular measurement and to
customize and optimize the evaluation of results. To ensure that the instrument resour-
ces are easily accessible and that user-defined configurations can be conveniently
implemented, stored and reused, the instrument uses a hierarchy of structures:

Global resources can be used for all measurements, irrespective of the current
measurement session.
●
All non-global settings of the current measurement session (comprising one or
more channel setups) can be saved to an instrument settings file (
*.dfl
) and later
recalled.
●
A channel setup comprises a set of diagrams together with the underlying system,
channel, trace and display settings. It can be saved to a channel setup file and
later recalled.
●
The diagrams show traces which are assigned to channels. See Chapter 9.1.3,
"Traces, channels and diagrams" , on page 185.
9.1.1 Global (persistent) settings
The VNA mode manages global settings that apply to all measurements, irrespective
of the current measurement setup. The following list contains examples of global set-
tings:

Calibration kits
●
Connector types
●
Calibration pool: power correction data (R&S ZNL only), and system error correc-
tion data
●
Directories for trace data, limit lines, calibration data etc.
●
Global VNA mode settings, to be accessed via [Setup] > "VNA Setup"
●
External power meter configurations (R&S ZNL only).
Global settings are not part of an instrument settings or channel setup file, nor are they
affected by an instrument [Preset]. Some of them can be "Reset" in the VNA Setup dia-
log.
