1. Remember to fully raise the engage stage before loading the cantilever holder.
l
Compared to the S, on the ES scanner it is more dif-
ficult to see if there is enough clearance for safely
loading the cantilever holder.
l
The stage needs to be high enough so that when you
mount the cantilever holder it does not come in con-
tact with the sample.
l
Rotate the Engage Control Knob on the Cypher clock-
wise and hold until the engage stage is at its upper
limit of travel. Or, Hit the (Un)/Load Sample Button
prior to mounting the cantilever holder. The upper
position is safe for all samples other than those that
are too thick to be run in the ES.
Note: Pay attention! Failure to
check for clearance may cause
serious damage to your can-
tilever holder and sample stage.
2. Never load non-flat samples into the ES scanner.
l
Unlike the S scanner, the ES scanner cannot accept
non-flat samples. A non-flat sample is any sample in
which the region to be scanned is not the tallest fea-
ture on the sample puck. For example, the sample
shown on the left has a magnet glued to the puck
that is taller than the sample.

Given the low profile of the ES cantilever holders, it is
not possible to engage on the sample shown on the
left since the magnet would hit the cantilever holder
before the cantilever engaged on the sample.

For electrical measurements, use the low-profile elec-
trical sample puck (as shown on the right) provided
in the accessory kit.
Note: Attempting to start a tip
approach on a “non-flat”
sample may cause serious dam-
age to your cantilever holder
and sample stage.
