14 Troubleshooting
The following table may assist you in troubleshooting. The table is not exhaustive.
In practice, problems which are not listed here may also occur.
14.1 How to proceed for troubleshooting
▶
Always act systematically and focused, even under pressure of time. Random and
imprudent disassembly and readjustment of settings might result in the inability to
ascertain the original error cause.
▶
First obtain a general overview of how your product works in conjunction with the
entire system.
▶
Try to determine whether the product worked properly in conjunction with the
entire system before the troubles occurred.
▶
Try to determine any changes of the entire system in which the product is
integrated:
– Were there any changes to the product’s operating conditions or operating
range?
– Were there any changes (e.g. retrofit) or repairs carried out on the complete
system (machine/system, electrics, control) or on the product? If yes, which?
– Was the product or machine used as intended?
– How did the malfunction manifest itself?
▶
Try to get a clear idea of the error cause. If possible, ask the direct (machine)
operator.

14.2 Oil cleanliness
The oil cleanliness is decisive for the service life and reliability of a high-dynamics
punching axis. About 80 % of all problems arising with hydraulics can be traced
back to contamination in the high-response valve. By adhering to the oil cleanliness
specified by us (see Chapter 8.1.12 “Flushing the hydraulic system“ on page 71),
wear in the system can be reduced to a minimum.
The pilot servo-valve of the STW243 is sensitive to slim and long particles, which
block the nozzles of the nozzle/flapper plate system. These particles can only
be rinsed out, if you proceed as described in Chapter 8 “Commissioning“ under
“Flushing“. Pressureless flushing with a flushing plate will not eliminate the
associated risk. Firmly sticking particles can only be solved by impulse-like flushing.
Clogging indicators of filter elements of the power unit must be monitored and,
when contamination is signaled, filters must be replaced
The indicators can also respond at low oil temperatures. For this reason, the
indication should only be evaluated after the hydraulic system was in operation
for 5 to 10 minutes.
