2.5 Measurement of CO

and Anesthetics Concentration

The outlet nipple (Fig. 1-3, position 6) is located on the side wall of the device and serves to
discharge the test sample into the atmosphere (in the presence of volatile anesthetics in the an-
alyzed sample, it shall be connected to the ventilation system of a medical institution).
Connect one end of the sampling line to the
device’s inlet. Check the tightness of the capnome-
ter pneumatic circuit in accordance with it. 2.5.5. Connect the other end of the sampling line to
the airway adapter (connector) inserted into the patient breathing circuit (Figure 2-24).
Figure 2-24. Connection of the sampling line to the airway adapter (connector)
Microstream sampling line connects directly to the patient's breathing circuit.
The sampling line connected to the gas analysis inlet must not have liquid
droplets inside. Use only clean and dry lines.
To drain the condensate from the sampling line, SUSPEND the middle part
above the level of its ends. To prevent moisture accumulation in the airway
adapter, it shall be positioned so that its nipple, where the sampling line is
connected, is always POINTED UP (see Figure 2-24).
A large breathing
“dead space” reduces the accuracy of the gas measure-
ment (Et), so it is recommended to attach the airway adapter directly to the
patient's endotracheal tube.
Select the required type of capnograph ("sidestream") in the menu of general parameters set-
tings (it. 1.3.8).
Switch on the device and display the capnogram curve in one of the configurable graphical win-
dows for displaying curves (it. 1.3.5). If necessary, switch on the capnometry module with the
"CAPNO" button on the front panel.
The first 60 s after turning on the capnometry module, the temperature conditions of the optoe-
lectronic elements of its measuring chamber are set and stabilized, while the message "WARM-
ING" is displayed in the capnogram display window (the warm-up time depends on how much
the device is cooled), and immediately after that, within about 10 seconds, the CO
2
zero level is
calibrated with t
he message “ZERO CALIBRATION”.
Zero calibration is performed with the ambient air completely purified from carbon dioxide using
a special absorber.
At the end of these processes, the device is ready for measurement. However, take into ac-
count that the maximum measurement accuracy is achieved after complete stabilization of the
thermal mode of the measuring chamber, which occurs after about 10 min after the start of the
capnometry module.
