Enabling Office PhoneMail Mailboxes
Each telephone extension on your Office PhoneMail system has an associated voice mailbox.
To prevent voice mail fraud, all Office PhoneMail mailboxes are disabled at system start-up, and
cannot store or play messages until they are actively enabled by the system administrator.
For subscribers who will have both an extension and a mailbox, the extension must be enabled
before the mailbox can be enabled.
Note that an extension’s mailbox does not have to be enabled in order for the extension to func-
tion properly — even without a mailbox, an extension owner can place, receive, hold, transfer,
or conference calls. You need only enable mailboxes for those employees who would benefit
from personal call coverage.
The only exception to the default disabled status of the mailboxes is the general delivery mail-
box. The general delivery mailbox is the mailbox generally associated with the human attendant
(9 or 0). It has a default status of enabled so that if a person is not available to answer company
phones, the mailbox is always available. The general delivery mailbox cannot be disabled.
Once you have enabled your own personal mailbox, you will be able to access the system ad-
ministration menu from that mailbox — or, indeed, from any enabled mailbox — instead of only
from the pre-enabled general delivery mailbox.
Extensions are disabled one at a time.
You cannot disable an extension if it is a caller-controlled routing (CCR) destination.
For more information on CCR, see Chapter 7, “Customizing Your System.”
To prevent unauthorized use of your Office PhoneMail system, enable mailboxes
only when they are to be actively used by an employee. Make sure that all unused
mailboxes are disabled
