Problem Determination
Chapter 3. Problem Determination Procedure
This chapter describes how to handle problems that might occur in the IBM
5400-006 printer.
3.1 Problem Determination
Some problems can be corrected by simple operations. If a problem occurs, read
this chapter and attempt to determine and resolve the problem before calling your
IBM service representative.
Ÿ
Power does not come on.
– Turn the Power switch off, wait five seconds, and turn it on again.
– Insert the plug tightly into the outlet.
– Check the outlet.
Ÿ
Nothing is printed or it is printed incorrectly.
– Make sure the interface cable is connected correctly. Use only an
IBM-approved interface cable.
– Check the initial settings.
– Make sure that you are using a power plug with three prongs. Do not plug
a three-prong power cord into a two-prong power plug.

A message is displayed.
– See 3.2, “Messages and Actions ” on page 3-2.
Ÿ
Print quality is poor.
– Adjust the form thickness lever position according to 2.9.1, “Adjusting the
Print Pressure” on page 2-47.
– Check the tractor position so that the form is not too tight or too slack.
– If the print becomes extremely faint at the mid-line position, replace the
ribbon according to 2.8, “Replacing the Ribbon” on page 2-33.
– If the print becomes faint at a specific digit or some lines and the value of
the line counter exceeds 100,000, refer to 3.5, “Inspecting the Platen and
Changing Strike Position” on page 3-11.
If the problem cannot be solved by any of the above operations, call your IBM
service representative.

