2.8 Replacing the Ribbon
Replace the ribbon immediately in any of the following cases:
Ÿ
print becomes faint.
Ÿ
the ribbon is old and tattered.
Ÿ
the ribbon is torn or damaged.
Ÿ
the ribbon life message is displayed.
The IBM 5400-006 printer counts characters printed and displays a message
when the ribbon life is up.
There are two ways of replacing the ribbon for the IBM 5400-006 printer, replacing
the whole ribbon cassette or replacing only the ribbon with a refill. To replace only
the ribbon, see 2.8.3, “Refilling the Ribbon” on page 2-40.
Note: Your hands might get dirty when you are replacing the ribbon. Wear gloves
to keep your hands clean.
2.8.1 Removing the Ribbon Cassette
If the power is off, start from step 3.

Press Stop. The Start lamps turns off.

Turn the power switch off.

Open the set cover and push the platen open lever backward to open the
platen.
