Configuring a FASTCNFG File
FASTCNFG File Security
A FASTCNFG file usually contains information that should not be accessible to all
users (for example, passwords). The file can be secured by using one or both of the
following mechanisms:
FUP SECURE and FUP GIVE commands
Safeguard protection
For more information about file security, refer to the following manuals:
File Utility Program (FUP) Reference Manual
Safeguard Administrators Manual
Note that the file must be secured for read access by all of the FASTP network print
processes.
FASTCNFG File Alteration
DEVICE information can be added to, deleted from, or changed in a FASTCNFG file at
any time. However, updated information for a device becomes effective only after the
FASTP network print process controlling the device reads the information.
The first time a FASTP network print process opens a device, it reads the primary
FASTCNFG file and saves the file timestamp and the information in the configuration
entry for the device. Each time the print process opens that device, it checks the
timestamp of the primary FASTCNFG file again. If the file has been updated, the print
process reads the information in the configuration entry for the device and updates its
own timestamp and configuration information for this device.
Because the print process reads the FASTCNFG file when it opens the device, the
Spoolcom DEV EXCLUSIVE attribute can affect when the FASTCNFG file is read. The
default value is EXCLUSIVE OFF.
If EXCLUSIVE OFF is specified, a device is opened only if a job is queued for the
device and the FASTP network print process does not already have the device open.
The print process opens the device and sends the job to it.
If a job is queued for the device, and the print process already has the device open,
the print process sends the job to the device on the same open.
If no jobs are queued for the device, and the print process has the device open, it
closes the device after two minutes of inactivity.
If EXCLUSIVE ON is specified, the print process opens the device once and keeps it
open (that is, the print process does not open and close the device).
Therefore, to ensure that an altered FASTCNFG file is read, perform the following:
