Zodiak User Manual
Section 3 — Control Surface Description
Dialogs and Prompting
Some operating procedures on the panel involve modifying button
behavior until the procedure is completed or canceled. Prompting dialogs
can be displayed to the operator during the procedure. One example is
using the Master E-MEM key pad for numeric entry. The Master E-MEM
number buttons normally recall registers with a single button press. When
delegated for numeric entry (e.g. specifying an effect duration), a prompt
message appears on the E-MEM readout. Pressing the keypad buttons
under these conditions enters a numeric value, completed by pressing the
Enter
button, instead of recalling a register.
A group of buttons flashing is another type of prompt, indicating the user
must select one of these buttons (see
). Pressing
a flashing button in this case is a form of delegation, and does not change
the state of the pressed button.
Knob Behavior
The Zodiak system control knobs rotate freely without limits. A tone
sounds when the logical limit of a knob parameter has been reached.
The knobs on the separate Menu panel can control different functions
depending on the currently selected menu. These menu knobs are called
soft knobs, as the functions they control vary from menu to menu. Legends
on each menu indicate each knob’s parameters. Direct numeric entry is also
available for these parameters via a pop up keypad displayed on the Menu
panel touch screen.
Delegation
Delegation permits a single group of buttons and knobs to control a large
number of identical system functional areas, or objects. A Zodiak system
actually has multiple keyers, wipe pattern generators, and matte genera-
tors, making dedicated controls for each object unfeasible. Delegation con-
nects a group of controls, typically a subpanel, to a particular object.
Delegation can greatly reduce confusion over which button to press or
which knob to turn to control each object in the system.
Delegation on the Zodiak system provides exceptional ease of use and flex-
ibility. The delegation mechanism has intelligent customizable automatic
delegation, and individual delegation button groups. Together, these capa-
bilities can automatically satisfy almost all of a user’s delegation require-
ments, freeing the operator from manual delegation. Automatic delegation
can be instantly disabled and enabled from the Main panel, and manual
and momentary delegation remains available at any time.
