IDENTIFICATION
Starter Motor (Figure 3)
T|he build date uses the format of year, month, and
day for the motor frame. The month is shown in alpha
for^n; January is A, February is B, etc. Therefore 85L12
is 1985, Dec. 12.
Armature (Figure 4)
T[he build date is stamped on the laminations near the
part number. The format is month, year. A83 is,January
1983.
Drive Assembly (Figure 5)
The build date is stamped on the laminations near the
pajl number. The format is year, month, day. The month
is shown in alpha form; A85 is January 1985.
Solenoid (Figure 6)
th e build date is Stamped on the solenoid. The for
mat is year, month, day. The month is shown in alpha
form; A 83 is January 1983. Therefore 3 K 18 is 1983
November 18.

Before disassembling the starter motor for repair, the
fol owing tests should be made. .

Inspect
1. Pinion for freedom of rotation by turning it in the
overrun direction on the shaft, th e pinion should
turn without turning the shaft of the body of the
drive assembly.
2. Armature for freedom of rotation by turning the pin
ion in the opposite direction from above, th e pin
ion, shaft, and body of the drive assembly should
all rotate together. If necessary, pry the pinion with
a screwdriver to turn it.
• Tight bearings, a bent armature shaft, or a
loose pole screw will cause the armature to not
turn freely.
• If , the armature does not turn freely, the motor
should be disassembled.
