V8 ENGINES, GASOLINE 6A2-29
Figure 61—Measuring the Gaging Plastic
Tighten
• Main bearing cap bolts (134) to 135 N-m (100
ft. lbs.).
«--M Remove or Disconnect (Figures 59, 60, and
61)
1. Main bearing cap,bolts (134).
2. Main bearing cap (132 and 133).
• DO NOT REMOVE THE GAGING PLASTIC
FROM THE JOURNAL OR LOWER BEARING
INSERT
Measure (Figure 61)
' Gaging plastic as follows:
1. The flattened gaging plastic will adhere to either
the lower bearing insert or journal.
2. On the edge of the gaging plastic envelope
there is a graduated scale. Without removing
the gaging plastic, measure its compressed
width (at the widest point) with the graduations
oh the gaging plastic envelope (figure 61).
.3. If the flattened gaging plastic tapers toward the
middle or ends, there is a difference in clear
ance indicating taper, low spot or other irregu
larity of the bearing or, journal'.; Measure the
journal with a micrometer if the flattened gaging
plastic indicates more than 0.001 inch differ-

;
4. Normally main bearing journals wear evenly
and are not but-of-round. However, if a bearing
is being fitted; to an Out-of-round (6 001 inch
maximum) journal, be sure to
fit
tp the maxiT
mum diameter of the journal. If the bearing is
fitted to the minimum diameter and the journal
is excessively out-of-round, interference
between the bearing and the journal will result
in rapid bearing failure.
5 If the bearing clearance is within specifications*
the bearing is satisfactory. If the clearance is
hot within; specifications, replace the bearing.
Always replace both upper and lower inserts as
a unit.
■
■
6. A standard 0.001 inch or 0.002 inch undersize
bearing may produce the proper clearance. |f
hot, it will be necessary to regrind the crank
shaft journal for use with the next undersize
bearing. After selecting the new bearing,
recheck the clearance.
7. Remove the flattened gaging plastic.
8. Perform the preceding steps on the remaining
main bearings.
FINAL ASSEMBLY
j«M-| Install or Connect (Figures 59 and 62)
• The crankshaft (130) and upper main bearing
inserts (136) should already be installed, from the
,
"Main Bearing Selection” procedure.
• Apply engine oil to the lower main bearing inserts.
