The heavy-duty 5-roll drive assembly is moved into
mesh with the ring gear by the action of the solenoid.
The pinion remains engaged until the solenpid circuit is
interrupted by release of the engine control switch. Thej
pinion overruns when the engine starts to reduce the
possibility of damage to the starter. j j
Type 350 starter motors have overcrank protection.
The motor has a built-in thermostat which opens and
causes the circuit to the Solenoid “S” terminal to open if
the motor gets too hot, stopping the cranking cycjeji
After the motor cools, usually in one to 6 minutes, thO
thermostat closes and the motor can again be cranked.
Internally, the thermostat is attached to the commutator
end ground terminal lead (figure 2). i'{
Type 300 starter motors have a grounding terminal
installed in the commutator end frame. Type 350 starter
motors have this terminal plus a grounding stud
installed in the field frame in place of one of the pole
shoe screws. Wiring connections to the starter motor
are shown in SECTION 6D2 in each truck service manf

Under normal conditions, no maintenance will be
required between engine overhaul periods. At the time
of engine overhaul, starter motors should
be
disassem­
bled, inspected, cleaned, and tested as described in
this section.
ADJUSTABLE DRIVE HOUSING
The drive housing is attached to the lever housing; by
the screws located around the outside of the housing.
To relocate the housing, remove the screws, rotate the
housing, and reinstall the screws. In this assembly, the
