Figure 4—Bench Check Connections
• Connect the generator to the battery in a nor
mal manner, then momentarily connect a jum
per lead from the battery positive to the
generator “R” terminal.
3. Slowly increase the generator speed and observe
the voltage.
4. If the voltage is uncontrolled with speed and
increases above 15.5 volts on a 12-volt system,
replace the regulator arid check the field winding.
5. If the voltage is below 15.5 volts on a 12-volt sys
tem, operate the generator at moderate speed.
Turn the carbon pile on and and adjust the carbon
pile as required to obtain maximum current output.
Do not allow voltage to drop below 13 volts.
6. If the output is within 15 amperes of the rated out
put as stamped on the generator frame, the gener
ator is good.
7. If the output is not within 15 amperes of the rated
output, keep the battery loaded with the carbon
pile, and ground the generator field.
■... • The ground tab is within 25 mm (1 inch) of the
casting surface. DO NOT force the Screwdriver
deeper into the end frame.
8. Operate the generator at moderate speed and
adjust the carbon pile as required to obtain maxi
mum output.
9. If the output is within 15 amperes of the rated out
put, replace the regulator and check the field wind
ing.
10. If the output is not within 15 amperes of the rated
output, check the field winding, diode trio, rectifier
bridge, and stator as described later under “Inspec
tion and Repair" and "Electrical Tests."
DISASSEMBLY
SLIP RING END FRAME
Disassemble (Figures 5 through 7)
*
• Hold the generator in a vise, clamping to one
mounting lug lengthwise.
• Scribe a mark to help locate the frame end parts in
the same position during assembly.
1. Four through bolts (44).
2. Slip ring end frame (5) from the drive end frame ;
(26) and rotor assembly.
• Prying with a screwdriver at the stator slots will
aid disassembly.
3. Three rectifier bridge nuts to disconnect the stator.
4. Stator (13) from the slip ring end frame.
• If necessary, carefully pry the stator away from
the slip ring end frame with a screwdriver.
5. Nut from the “I” terminal connecting strap (45) (fig
ure 6).
6. Connecting strap and washer from inside the frame
and the threaded relay terminal from the outside.
7. Two insulated screws (12) and one ground screw
(11) from the regulator.
8. Screw and washer from the brush holder (10).
9. Regulator (6), brush holder, and diode trio (17)
from the end frame.
A. Loosen the regulator screw securing the diode
trio connecting strap,
B. Lift Out the diode trio and brush holder assem
bly.
10. Screws attaching the capacitor (18) to the slip ring
end frame and the rectifier bridge (20) (figures 5
and 7). :
'
11. Ground screw (11) with washer and nut (8) on the
"BAT” terminal from the rectifier bridge.
12. "R" terminal connector (3) from the rectifier bridge
and the slip ring end frame.
13. Rectifier bridge from the end frame.
14. “BAT” terminal and shield (1) from the outside of
the frame.
15. Bearing (4) from the slip ring end frame using a
tube with a slightly smaller outside diameter than
the bearing.
A. Support the slip ring end frame from the inside.
B. Press the bearing from the outside toward the
inside.
