4.11.2 GROUND SPEED ADJUSTMENT
When changing the nozzle tip size is not desirable, the operator can adjust the ground speed to achieve the desired
application rate.
1. Using the Nozzle Rate Delivery Charts in Section 4.9, look up the flow rate (gpm or L/min) of the nozzle tips
used.
2. Calculate the ground speed (mph or km/h) ), required to achieve the desired application rate
(gpa or L/ha)
US and Imperial Units
mph = 5940 x gpm (per nozzle)
gpa x W
where in US and Imperial units:
5940 = conversion factor
mph = miles per hour
gpm = gallons per minute (per nozzle)
gpa = gallons per acre
W = nozzle spacing (in inches)
EXAMPLE - US Units: The user wants to apply 8 US
gpa using XR8002VS (02) tips at 40 psi with a nozzle
spacing of 22".
1. Refer to the US Nozzle Delivery Rate chart in
Section 4.9.2. Look up the “Flow Rate - 1 Noz.
US gpm” column. It shows that 02 tips have a flow
rate of 0.20 gpm at 40 psi.
2. Calculate the ground speed required:
mph = 5940 x gpm (per nozzle)
gpa x W
= 5940 x 0.20 gpm
8 x 22
= 6.75 mph
Metric Units
km/h = 5940 x L/min (per nozzle)
L/ha x (W / 10)
where in metric units:
5940 = conversion factor
km/h = kilometres per hour
L/min = liters per minute (per nozzle)
L/ha = liters per hectare
W = nozzle spacing (in cm)
EXAMPLE - Metric Units: The user wants to apply 75
L/min using XR8002VS (02 tips) at 275 kPa with a
nozzle spacing of 55.9 cm.
1. Refer to the Metric Nozzle Delivery Rate chart,
Section 4.9.3. Look up the “Flow Rate - 1 Noz.
liters/min.” column. It shows that 02 tips Noz. US
gpm” column. It shows that 02 tips have a flow rate
of 0.76 L/min at 275 kPa.
2. Calculate the ground speed required:
km/h = 5940 x L/min (per nozzle)
L/ha x (W / 10)
= 5940 x 0.76 I/min
75 x (55.9 / 10)
= 10.75 km/hr
