ADJUSTING FOR NOZZLE SPACING OTHER THAN 20" (50 cm)
The information provided in the Nozzle Delivery Rate Charts in Section 4.9 is based on 50 cm (20") spacing.
Changing the nozzle spacing changes the application rate. To achieve the application rates shown in the charts
when spraying with nozzle spacing other than 50 cm (20"), the nozzle tip size or ground speed must be adjusted.
4.11.1 NOZZLE TIP SIZE SELECTION
This method is used when you want to determine the nozzle tip size required to achieve a desired application rate
(gpa or L/ha) at a known ground speed.
1. Determine the required flow rate per nozzle (gpm or L/min) using the appropriate equation below:
US and Imperial Units
gpm = gpa x mph x W
5940
where in US and Imperial units:
5940 = conversion factor
mph = miles per hour
gpm = gallons per minute (per nozzle)
gpa = gallons per acre
W = nozzle spacing (in inches)
Metric Units
L/min = L/ha x km/hr x (W / 10)
5940
where in metric units:
5940 = conversion factor
km/hr = kilometres per hour
L/min = liters per minute (per nozzle)
L/ha = liters per hectare
W = nozzle spacing (in cm)
2. Using the adjusted flow rate determined in step 1, look up the nozzle tip number and pressure required to
achieve the desired application rate in the Nozzle Delivery Rate Charts.
EXAMPLE - Metric Units: The operator wants to apply
75 Lha at 11.26 km/hr with a nozzle spacing of 55.9
cm. using XR8002VS (02) tips.
L/min = L/ha x km/h x (W / 10)
5940
= 75 x 11.26 x (55.9/10)
5940
= 0.79 L/min (per nozzle)
Refer to the Metric Nozzle Delivery Rate chart, Section
4.9.3. Look up the “Flow Rate - 1 Noz. liters/min.”
column. It shows that 02 tips have a flow rate of
0.76
L/min at 275 kPa or 0.86 L/min at 350 kPa, so the
operator would select 02 tips with a pressure adjustment
above 275 kPa.
EXAMPLE - US Units: The user wants to apply 8 US
gpa at 7 mph with a nozzle spacing of 22", using
XR8002VS (02) tips.
gpm = gpa x mph x W
5940
= 8x7x22
5940
= 0 .207 gpm (per nozzle)
Refer to the US Nozzle Delivery Rate chart in Section
4.9.2. Look up the “Flow Rate - 1 Noz. US gpm”
column. It shows that 02 tips have a flow rate of 0.20
gpm at 40
psi, so this would be the nozzle tip size and
pressure required to apply 8 US gpm at 7 mph with 22"
nozzle spacing.
