5-18
NOTE: Note that the plug-in terminals are desig-
nated A, B, C, and D for testing purposes.
2. Connect the positive lead of a 12-volt power supply
to the red wire (A) and the negative lead of the 12-
volt power supply to the black wire (B).
3. The pump should operate (it would be heard run-
ning).
NOTE: If the fuel pump fails to operate, the pump is
defective and must be replaced (see Section 4).
Testing Ignition
Components (4-Stroke)
NOTE: The battery must be at full charge for these
tests.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR/RECTIFIER
(DC Voltage Output)
1. Set the meter selector to the DC Voltage position.
2. Connect the red tester lead to the positive battery
post; then connect the black tester lead to the nega-
tive battery post.
3. With the engine running at 2500-3000 RPM, the
meter must show 12-14.5 DC volts.
MAGNETO COIL (No Load)
The connector is the white three-wire one on the right
side upper frame.
ZJ249A
NOTE: Test the connector that comes from the
engine.
1. Set the meter selector to the AC Voltage position.
2. Test between the three yellow wires for a total of
three tests.
3. With the engine running at 2500-3000 RPM, all wire
tests must be within 36-44 AC volts.
NOTE: If tests failed, check all connections, etc.,
and test again. If no voltage is present, replace the
stator assembly.
Resistance
1. Set the meter selector to the OHMS position.
2. Test between the three yellow wires for a total of
three tests.
3. The meter reading must be 0.2-0.4 ohm.
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
Resistance
1. Set the meter selector to the OHMS position.
2. Connect the red tester lead to the blue/white wire;
then connect the black tester lead to the green/white
wire. The meter reading must be within 173-211
ohms.
PRIMARY COILS
NOTE: On the non-turbo models to access the pri-
mary coils, remove the air silencer. Proceed to Air
Silencer (1100 cc Non-Turbo) sub-section in Section 3
and follow steps 1-12 of REMOVING.
NOTE: On the turbo models to access the primary
coils, remove the console, handlebar close-off panel,
left-side rear spar panel, and left-side knee pad.

Peak Voltage
NOTE: The peak voltage test should be made using
the Fluke Model 77 Multimeter with Peak Voltage
Reading Adapter. If any other type of tester is used,
readings may vary due to internal circuitry.
1. Set the meter selector to the DC Voltage position.
CAUTION
Always disconnect the battery when performing resis-
tance tests to avoid damaging the multimeter.
CAUTION
Always disconnect the battery when performing resis-
tance tests to avoid damaging the multimeter.
