NOTE: At this point if valve/tappet clearances are
within specifications, proceed to step 20. If any valve/
tappet clearance is not within specifications, proceed
to steps 6-19.
6. After identifying the valve/tappet clearances that are
out of specification, loosen the tensioner adjuster
bolt (A); then remove the two Allen-head cap screws
(B) securing the tensioner adjuster to the cylinder
head.

NOTE: Do not remove the tensioner adjuster bolt
until the tensioner assembly is removed from the cyl-
inder head to avoid internal components from falling
into the engine compartment.
7. Remove the cable ties (noting their locations for
assembling purposes) securing the wiring harness to
the throttle-body fuel rail; then loosen the intake
flange clamps securing the throttle bodies. Remove
the throttle bodies and place them on the tunnel.
NOTE: After removing the throttle bodies, close off the
intake ports of the cylinder head to avoid any foreign
objects or components from falling into the engine.
8. Remove the cap screws securing the camshaft covers
to the cylinder head; then remove the covers.
Remove both camshafts.

NOTE: For assembling purposes, both camshafts
must be removed for this procedure.
9. Using a magnet or a needle-nose pliers, carefully
remove the tappet (A) and account for the shim (B)
from the out-of-specification valves as identified in
step 6.

CAUTION
If for any reason additional tappets and shims are
removed, care must be taken that they are marked as
to which valve they were removed from or severe
engine damage may occur.
