the rubber packing rings are in good repair. Prior to reassembling, wash parts of
the pump, booster and control valve in kerosene or gasoline, dry them (without
wiping over) and oil.
When packing grease in the steering hinges, see that the protective cou-
pling is not deformed noticeably under lubricant pressure.
Changing of oil in steering hydraulic system:
1. Warm the engine; the oil temperature in the steering hydraulic sys-
tem should be not lower than 20 °C.
2. Jack up the front axle.
3. Turn the wheels to the right as far as they will go.
4. Disconnect the booster hoses from the pipe lines off the steering gear.
5. Remove cover 7 (see Fig. 63) of the oil tank, filter 2, and wash the filter.
6. Drain oil from the steering booster; for this purpose turn the steerable
wheels to the left as far as they will go.
7. Connect the booster hoses to the steering gear lines.
8. Remove the remaining oil out of the pump tank; refit the gauze filter and
tank cover.
9. Wash the hydraulic system, for this purpose:
- fill 1.5 l of pure oil in the tank;
- start the engine and add oil up to the upper mark of the measuring
rule; then turn the steerable wheels either side as far as they will go (two or three
times) with the engine running idling; and set the wheels in the extreme right
-
hand position; furthermore perform work as per Items 4, 6, 7.
10. Fill oil in the hydraulic system as follows:
- fill 1.5 l of pure oil in the tank;
- start the engine and add oil up to the upper mark; then, as the engine
runs idling, bleed air out of the hydraulic system by turning the steering wheel
either side as far as it will go (till air stops bubbling in the tank);
- stop the engine;
- check the oil level in the tank and add it, if need be;
- fit the filler plug of the tank back.
Testing for free wheeling
. Angular play of the steering wheel should be
checked rocking the steering wheel to this and that side till the steerable wheels
begin to turn.
Perform checking on a completely equipped truck the engine running idling.
The truck should be placed on an even ground with dry, hard surface (asphalt,
concrete). The steerable wheels position must correspond to the straightfor-
ward travel of the truck. The steering hydraulic system should be filled, and air
evacuated out of the working fluid.
Angular play of the steering wheel should not exceed 25
0
.
Should free wheeling exceed this amount and plates in steering linkage are
eliminated, it is necessary to adjust steering gear’s meshing. Prior to adjustment
drain oil from the steering gear.
Adjustment of steering gear’s meshing
(see Fig. 58) should be carried out af-
ter complete assembly of the booster control valve. If the booster control valve is
assembled correctly the clearance between the valve body face and that of the
movable plunger ring shall be 2.08-2.27 mm. When checking this clearance by
means of a gauge, engage the segment with the worm and apply a torque of
17-19 N
·
m (1.7-1.9 kgf
·
m) on the worm shaft.
The total move of the slide valve about its body amounts to 4.16-4.54 mm.
