are signs of water penetration into the oil sump of the engine. If so, change the oil
immediately. If the water has got into the oil sump, change the oil.
Check availability of the water in the fuel-feed system by screwing out
draining plug of the fuel tank and that of the fuel filter until the fuel starts pouring.
If the water has got into the tank, drain the sediment out of the tank and replace
the filtering elements of the fine fuel filter.
Remove the water out of the pump unit air line and the heat exchanger of the
starting preheater by switching on the pump unit for 2-3 min.
Check the hollows of the engine flywheel housing and clutch housing for water
by removing the hatch cover, cranking the flywheel and screwing the conical plug
out of the lower hatch of the clutch housing. Upon checking put the removed parts
in their places. Perform the checking right after crossing over the ford, not leaving
the parked truck without the said check for a long truck.
Apply some lubricant into the plain bearings and joints with the help of oil
gun.
When moving after crossing over the ford, a special care should be taken due
to reduction of the brakes efficiency because of wetting the brake linings. Dry the
brake mechanisms 3-5 times by breaking the truck in the course of its moving.
If the engine has stopped, while fording, try to start up the engine two or three
times with the
starter, having one-minute breaks between the starts. If the engine
can not be started, the truck must be drawn out of the water immediately.
After the stuck truck has stayed in the water for more than 20 min, tow it to
any nearest service station where they perform its service. If the truck moves by its
own power check all basic assembly units of the truck, as well as the hollows of the
wheel hubs and those of the front axle steering knuckles for water penetration into
them. If the oil level in the truck units is higher than the norm, reduce it to the re-
quired one and replace the oil at the first opportunity.
After fording, prepare all assembly units of the truck for operation under nor-
mal road conditions and eliminate the reasons of water penetration into them. To
keep the truck ready for fording perform regularly checks of the condition of its
hoses, pipes, their connections, units seals and remedy faults in due time.
Crossing trenches, ditches and pits.
Drive at a low speed, lock the transfer
box differential under extremely heavy conditions. Approach the trenches at square
angles; otherwise, the load could be re
-
distributed and unloaded wheels could slip
when the truck is inclined.
Driving with trailer or semitrailer
. To ensure serviceability of towing device
use a towing loop of 90 mm in inner diameter and a sectional area of 42 mm, a
towing hook with throat diameter of 48 mm and width in the throat zone of 69 mm.
Maximum permissible dimensions: loop cross-section – 38 mm; hook throat –
52 mm; hook width – 66 mm.
The towing hooks and loops with dimensions different from the above should
be replaced with new ones.
When maneuvering, avoid folding of the trailer until its tow
-
bar thrusts against
the end of the chassis frame side member or other truck components.
Non-observation of these requirements may cause the trailer loop seizure in
the towing hook throat, and breakage of the towing hook.
When crossing extremely difficult sections of terrain, uncouple the trailer, and
after crossing the terrain section pull it to the truck with the help of winch. In doing
so, mind that three or four coils should be left on the winch drum. Pull the trailer at
the medium engine speed. Do not tow the trailer by the winch rope.
