To eliminate the clearances in the course of operation unscrew nuts 3, drive the
road train for 100–200 m, braking it until the clearances disappear and after that
tighten the nut until it gets in touch with handle 1 that should be in contact with the
saddle. Then screw up through half a turn more and lock it.
To couple the towing truck with a semi-trailer turn handle 1 to you by hand (or
with the help of the tire iron inserted in the handle end) until the locking cam 5 is
fixed in the pulled-out position by latch 6. In so doing the rod of locking cam 5 is
released automatically, its locking fillet enters the guiding hole of the saddle boss.
Simultaneously, safety strip 19 is moved aside by the projection on handle 1.
If it is difficult to pull the handle (the force applied to the handle is 0.25-0.40 kN
(25–40 kgf)), it is recommended to move the handle upwards/downwards repeatedly
and simultaneously turn it to you. In so doing latch 6 will bear up against the end of
locking cam 5 and hold it in the opened position. When the truck starts movement, the
semi-trailer pintle turns rear catch 18 relative to pin 17; in so doing catch 18 presses
latch 6 with its end, turns it and releases locking cam 5, which moves under the action
of spring 9, bears up against the end of rear catch 18 and holds it in the opened posi-
tion.
The bolster truck is coupled with the semi-trailer automatically. Upon coupling,
make sure that the safety strip is in the upright position. It indicates that the bolster
truck has been coupled with the semi-trailer.
Fifth wheel maintenance
Before a departure check whether the fifth wheel is fixed to the chassis frame se-
curely and verify fastening of the catch lock. Check the condition of the catches,
locking cam and latch spring.
Worn and deformed components should be replaced by the new ones.
Coupling and uncoupling of bolster truck and semi-trailer
Before coupling make sure that the fifth wheel and its fastening are in good
working order; the saddle is free from dirt, and that there are no foreign objects on it;
if need be, clean the fifth wheel top plane from soiled grease and coat it with a thin
layer of fresh grease. Brake the semi-trailer with the help of the parking brake and set
it on the supporting device so that the semi-trailer supporting plane is at the same
level with the fifth wheel of the bolster truck, or maximum 10 mm lower than it.
Couple and uncouple the semi-trailer on an even horizontal hard
-
surface site. In
so doing the longitudinal axes of the bolster truck and semi-trailer should locate
along the same straight line.
If the catches are in the closed state, turn handle 1 to you; in so doing the handle
should be held pulled aside by latch 6. Then turn catch 18 counter-clockwise until
the front end of the catch leaves the zone of the semi-trailer pintle travel. When
turning, the catch acts on the latch, turns it and releases the locking cam that moves,
rests on the catch and holds it open.
For coupling
follow this procedure:
- drive the bolster truck by reversing at a low speed to the semi-trailer so that
the pintle of the latter enters the catches of the saddle. The bolster truck and the
semi-trailer are coupled automatically;
