deflating the tire, disconnect the air supply hose not from the wheel, but from a
source of compressed air. It is allowed to disconnect the hose from the wheel only
after deflating the tire completely.
If the rings have been reinstalled incorrectly, replace defective parts, make sure
that the bead and lock rings are installed properly (at a pressure of 50 kPa
(0.5 kgf/cm
2
), inflate the tire up to the pressure that ensures setting of the tire
beads on the bead seat, and then inflate the tire up to its nominal pressure.
Contrary to the wide-spread design of wheels with conical bead seats, setting
of the tire beads onto the toroidal bead seats under increasing inner pressure does
not happen gradually, but instantly, usually at a pressure of 450-500 kPa
(4.5-5.0 kgf/cm
2
), which exceeds nominal pressure to some extent.
8. Balance the wheel with the tire.
9. Mount the wheel onto the hub and fasten it, the tightening torque of the
nuts fastening the wheels should be 400-500 N.m (40-50 kgf.m).
To connect the wheel inflation hose to the wheel valve mount the wheel rela-
tive to the hub cap so that the inflation hose is symmetric between the studs, fas-
tening the wheel on the side of the wheel valve.
When mounting the wheel, tighten the nuts, fastening the disk to the hub in
the following order:
- screw all the nuts onto the studs manually;
- first tighten the nuts by a wrench with the wheel being lifted. In so doing
screw the nuts, alternating them or crosswise. When screwing in the first five nuts,
make sure that the nuts are centered with their spherical chamfers in the spherical
chamfers of the fastening holes of the wheel disks. The nuts should be tightened
securely, because their insufficient and uneven tightening can result in lateral
runout of the wheels assembled with tires.
Balancing of 254
г
-508 wheels assembled with tires.
The permissible unbal-
ance is 5.2 kg.cm. In the course of operation, as the tires are wearing and by other
reasons (remounting of the tires) the initial balance infringes; therefore, when the
truck travels, oscillation and vibration, especially those of the front wheels, can oc-
cur.
The unbalance causes rapid wear of the treads, wear of the steering and
suspension components as well as makes the control over the truck more difficult.
It is recommended to perform static balancing of the wheels assembled with tires.
Unbalance can be remedied by means of mounting the balancing weights, which are
held on the bead ring by a plate spring. The mass of the single balancing weight is
0.38 kg. To remedy unbalance from 5.2 to 15.2 kg
·
cm, mount one weight, from 15.2
to 25.2 kg.cm – two balancing weights; from 25.2 to 35.2 kg.cm — three balancing
weights, from 35.2 to 45.2 kg.cm – four balancing weights.
Prior to balancing remove mud and alien objects from the wheel and tire.
The tire pressure should be nominal. The wheel and tire on a special device is
based over the plane of the disk and over spherical chamfers of the fastening holes,
when balancing it.
The order of installing the balancing weights is as follows:
1. Deflate the tires.
2. Press the tire bead out of the bead ring with a tire iron, where the balancing
weight is placed, until a clearance of 1-2 mm appears.
3. Mount the weight with the spring onto the bead ring, holding them by hand,
set the spring beyond the bead ring edge, slightly hammering it, and upset it com-
pletely. If the spring is set incorrectly, it can slip off the bead ring abruptly, there-
fore, be careful.
